Lake Leelanau Michigan

in the Heart of Leelanau

Welcome to our website

Lake Leelanau Walleye Festival  Weekend of May 22 Details available soon

This website is a project of the Lake Leelanau Community Association for the purpose of promoting the interests of the town, its residents and its businesses.  Eventually, information regarding the town's history, people, businesses, attractions, in short everything you would want to know about the town and the immediate area will be found here.

For starters the Town of Lake Leelanau embraces the "Narrows" which connect North Lake Leelanau with South Lake Leelanau.  The town is nearly in the exact geometrical center of the Leelanau Peninsula between Suttons Bay on the East coast, and Leland on the West.Passing through the town is M-204 the only road which crosses the peninsula from East to West for the length of the two basins of  the lake

Lake Leelanau by Air

This stunning fall view of the town of Lake Leelanau includes the Narrows, North Lake Leelanau (the Lake) and Lake Michigan in the background graced by the islands of North and South Manitou. To the left in the distance is Pyramid point. Distance from bottom to top of the photo would be on the order of 20 miles. Photo courtesy Keith Burnham

The Narrows of Lake Leelanau looking North

This body of water (more like a stream) connects South Lake Leelanau with North Lake Leelanau. This connection between the lakes was created mostly by the construction of a dam on the Carp River in Leland in the 1850's or so. Photo courtesy Sheila Schaub

The Narrows of Lake Leelanau looking South

Ducks enjoy the relativley warm (not frozen) waters of South Lake Leelanau at the Narrows. Photo taken from M204 looking South near the bridge. DNR boat launch is to the left out of view. The right side shoreline is behind St. Marys School. Photo courtesy Sheila Schaub

Morning discussion at NJ grocery

This is a common scene in downtown Lake Leelanau, casual meetings and discussions (usually about politics or the latest "news") its small town wonderful stuff.

Lake Leelanau's Eastern side

Note the St. Mary's Steeple set against the background of fall color . This is a wonderful time to be here, a fall crispness in the air with warm sun on your back and colors that will awaken your senses Photo courtesy steve Clem

Approaching Lake Leelanau from the West

There is a point on M204 going to the East where the village of Lake Leelanau appears to be in a valley with a stream running through it. Its not an illusion but this photo doesn't quite capture it, I'll try again. Photo courtesy Steve Clem
